Choosing the right bed for an older dog

Choosing the right bed for an older dog

How ageing changes sleep

Older dogs sleep more, sleep more deeply, and feel pressure points far more than they used to. Stiff joints, thinning muscle, and conditions like arthritis mean a thin or sagging bed can leave them sore and reluctant to settle. A genuinely supportive bed can noticeably improve how easily they lie down and get back up.

Look for real orthopedic support

The single most important feature is a solid core of orthopedic or memory foam that holds its shape and cradles the joints, rather than loose filling that flattens within weeks. Press the bed firmly: a good one springs back slowly and evenly, and is thick enough that your dog's hips and elbows never reach the floor through it.

Easy in, easy out

Comfort is only half the job — an older dog also needs to get onto and off the bed without a struggle.

  • A low or partially open side makes stepping in easy for stiff legs
  • A non-slip base stops the bed sliding away as they climb on
  • A firm, level surface is easier to rise from than a deep, sinking one
  • Bolstered edges give a place to rest the head and neck

Warmth and placement

Ageing joints appreciate warmth. Choose a self-warming or well-insulated bed and place it somewhere draught-free, away from cold floors and busy walkways, but still close enough to the family that your dog doesn't feel shut away. Many older dogs settle best with their bed in a quiet corner of a room they already love.

Size, washability, and longevity

Pick a size that lets your dog stretch out fully on their side, not just curl up. A removable, machine-washable cover is essential — older dogs have more accidents and shed more — and a durable, supportive build means you won't be replacing it every season.
